Differences between Yoga and Pilates

Similarities between Yoga and Pilates

There are some attributes that are common between the two. Both practices fall into the category of mind and body exercises because they focus on the mind’s ability to control and guide the rest of the body.

This allows practitioners to gain self-esteem not only in the practice of the exercise, but in their day to day.

Both yoga and pilates concentrate on building physical strength, flexibility and coordination of the whole body. Also, both apply methods of breath control, which at the indicated time has a calming effect on the mind and body.

Yoga was introduced in the United States about 150 years ago, and it was growing in popularity through the 20th century. Now it is considered one of the main ones.

There are many different styles and levels of yoga, making it ideal for curious practitioners of all levels of training and all skills.

Poses and breathing work

The physical practice of yoga consists of poses, called “Asanas”; and in breathing exercises called “Pranayama”.

Any yoga class in a studio, gym or athletic center will include several variations of asanas and some pranayamas.

Depending on the style and level of the class, the asanas may include sitting or standing, with some type of twist or stretch forward or backward. Pranayamas can vary from stimulation exercises from high to very subtle level.

Yoga Asanas will strengthen, stretch and tone your entire body. A well-done yoga class will use every muscle.

Some classes are more physically challenging than others, but all yoga poses help to build and release your muscles and joints simultaneously.

Most forms of yoga require very little equipment (just a mat and your body), but some use artifacts, such as blocks, ribbons, among others, to improve practice.


Meditation is a discipline used to expand our consciousness, it is a key component in a good yoga practice. There are different styles and practices of meditation, all with different objectives.

The ultimate and universal goal of yoga is to achieve self-realization, which can be achieved by learning how to calm the ever-active flow of thought that floats through our minds.
